PS2 V12 (SCPH 70002) Disk Read Error

If your laser worked fine before you tried blocking sensors, then it should still work fine.
The problem probably lies in how you are blocking your sensors, and if it was done properly.
Are you just using the tape and tissue method?
If you sensors are blocked properly you should be able to play a disc with the lid open.
If it is your laser, they aren't that expensive to replace.

Yeah, I just used the tape and tissue method following one of the many guides found on the internet. The reason why I think I may have messed up the laser is because even after I remove the tape and tissue I still get a disk read error. Is there anything else that can be causing the DRE before I order a new laser?

I don't think you messed up your laser by blocking sensors, as your not even touching the laser.
If all your discs were working before you did this, then I would have to say its coincidence.
If its only the copy you made for the 007 exploit, then you have not compiled it properly and you will get DRE
You could try cleaning the laser first with 'Rubbing Alcohol and a q-tip. Just dip it, don't have it dripping wet and clean in a circular motion, gently but firmly for about 30 sec. Then use dry end of q-tip to dry it in same manner for about 6-8 secs.

Yeah, all my discs were working fine before, but now nothing at all is working, including originals. I've tried cleaning the laser with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip, but no dice. Even with originals the disc drive stops spinning after 30 seconds of the laser trying to read something to no avail. I've taken a 30 second HD video of my disc drive operating, which I'll post once it finishes uploading to YouTube and then hopefully one of you could help me out with a diagnosis. I've been quoted $80 to get it fixed, so that's not an option unless I do it myself. I think the problem occurred because the first time I popped it open fully I still had a disc in the the disc drive and perhaps I screwed up the alignment.

Well I was wondering that when you put the cover back on that you have it placed correctly.
You can test your discs with the cover off, as long as you hold the interlock switches down as shown in this site
V12 Slim Repair
$80 is too much to spend on a slim PS2, when you can buy them for like $99 new at walmart.
The slim laser is less than $20, and is easy to replace. Lots of videos on youtube to follow.

My YouTube upload failed after a couple of hours, but in any case, I tested it without the cover and still got a DRE. I went ahead and purchased a replacement laser off of ebay and will attempt to fix it on my own. If it doesn't work out I'll take it as a learning experience. In the meanwhile I've contacted a member and he has agreed to install FMCB for me so I'll just use that along with OPL. I'll post an update in a few weeks (the replacement lens is coming from Singapore) after I attempt to replace the laser.
Thanks for your help!

Hi
It is not hard too replace the laser, the only thing is too make sure the "Antistatic points" on the laser are removed before you install it.
A lot of ebay sellers will do this for you. You need a soldering iron and braid
I can show you some example by link to pictures
Disc will no longer spin after replacing laser - PS2 Slim - AfterDawn: Forums
And then just watch some youtube videos to help you out first.

Hmm, I was aware of the antistatic points so I purchased a soldering iron as well as a desoldering pump, but what's a braid?
