Ps2 swap drives?

Could someone please help me out with the following question?

I have 2x playstations2.
One is chipped but has a broken drive, and the other is still sealed.
I want to swap drives so i can play backups on the modded ps2, but is this possible since im changing hardware? (aka xbox)

If they are the same model groups (<v4, v5-v8, v9/v10), you can go ahead and swap the drives.

Ex. a v5 DVD can go into a V8 system, but not into a v9 or v3.
