PS2 Slim V12 -- Questions about the laser
PS2 Slim V12 -- Questions about the laser –
Recently, I've been using FMCB + ESR to run backups on a V12 PS2 slim. I use high quality media (Verbatim DVD+/-R's or DL DVD+R's) for all my backups. I've been playing roughly 3-4 months on occasion and noticed that the PS2 seems to be working harder when accessing burned backups as opposed to authentic copies of games. I've read about various fixes to prevent the laser from dying because I'm strapped for cash and can't buy a new slim (such as the summ0ne fix, subzero fix, etc.), but don't really know which one I should be using. That, plus the fact I have NO idea what the diagrams mean when looking at how to install these fixes. If anyone could offer advice and some clear explanations, I'd be grateful, thanks.
You have a v12 Slim. You're amongst the luckiest of PS2 slim owners. You should look into a HDD mod. Most people who do that install will include the laser fix. Search modshopplace. John is helpful when it comes to that. Yes, it cost as much as gettin a new PS2, but well worth it to play your backups via HDD.

If it is a v12 it Will need a fix. You need half decent soldering skills to install a fix. The other option would be to sell your v12 while it is still OK. (It will burnout the laser if you keep playing backups) and buy another model (v13 and up ). Cheers
I think for the v12 you definitely need a laser fix. I've got a comsoft v4 in mine.
Even if the laser does burnout though, lasers are really cheap now. You can get replacement lasers for $9.
