I've seen this stated by people here at this forum:

Sorry if I this doesn't sound intelligent (New to Fat PS2s):

    I have gotten a SCPH-39006(v8) v8 PS2, and it has a HD7 laser inside.

I thought that the HD7 is intended to be a replacement for the KHS-400R (And that v8s are also v7s with a newer BIOS, and v7s use KHS-400C lasers)?

It seemed to have been open at least trice before I got it (SCE warranty sticker torn, then the modder's warranty sticker, and another shop's sticker that was pasted over it was torn)...

I have to say that the drive assembly looks different from the SCPH-39001 (v7, and it had a KHS-400C) PS2 I had before I returned it for an exchange for this v8...

Also, I had this impression after reading several thread on the PS2's lasers here:

The KHS-400R is inferior to the KHS-400C...

    So is that true?

    -----
Nobody seemed to have really mentioned the Sanyo HD7 before. So is a HD7 worse or better than the KHS-* lasers?

I know that I had stated that I had a PS2 with a KHS-400C before, but I can't make an accurate conclusion as that one had a weak laser and had exchanged it for my v8.

Launch units (SCPH-1x000 consoles) use the KHS-400A/B lasers right?
So there are no "replacement" or "compatible" lasers to replace them?

The KHS-400C and KHS-400R had the KHS-400Q and KHS-400H to replace them respectively.

One reason 400c is preferred is because new, (non-sony) lasers are still available, and not many PS2 models used the HD7.

The link below is to a laser that is 400b-c compatible.

    But you can't stick a KHS-400R into a PS2 that uses a KHS-400C right?
    A HD7 is a KHS-400R compatible right?

So how can my SCPH-39006 use a HD7 when v7s are known to have KHS-400C lasers?

I know that my console is a v8, but v8s are v7s with a newer BIOS right?

Thanks.... somehow I was aware about that.

What about those older consoles that use KHS-400A lasers?

I thought of getting a SCPH-15000 from my local second hand dealer, but was paranoid about the lack of replacement parts.

i would rather walk into gamestop and buy a used fattie for $49.99 as advertised. online retailers need to lower the prices on refurbished khs-400x because the system value decreased. PS2 slim lasers are much more inexpensive.

If the console is worth a lot to me: yes.

Personally, I like collecting rare old stuff, and was interested in collecting that rare launch unit and (If possible) it's Hard Disk unit + Network Adaptor.

However, those items are extremely hard to get (Unless you are in Japan).
