    Hello,
I decided to post my problem here after some time, maybe someone experienced something like this. I will give it a shot.

My PS2 is second hand and behave like that since i bought it.
Tech info: PS2 Slim, 77004, motherboard version: GH - 051-12.
    Modbo modchip is removed.

The problem is that it freezes.
    Scenario 1.
Black screen after boot logo. Console boots and wants to display second screen i.e. Browse/System settings, but it never shows that, all there is is a smooth fade to a black screen after boot logo.
Sound is still there, but console is unresponsive to any input.

    Scenario 2.
Console successfully shows Browse/System settings screen, but few seconds after this it freezes. Rest is the same as before.

Scenario 3. I can go through both menus sometimes without the freeze. If you left it for a moment it will freeze.

Scenario 4. Pressing Triangle - Version on Browse/System settings screen freezes console every single time after one second. I can see all the software version numbers, but thats it.

Scenario 5. Any official game will freeze eventually. It can be 20 sec. or 4 minutes. Sound goes to infinite loop.

Scenario 6. DVD movie, usually 40 minutes of watching results in freeze.

Wierd thing here is that it NEVER freezes when using homebrew. Be that an CPU heavy emulator or SMS.

About freeze: It looks like even or odd fields are displayed all the time. So the interlacing still works, but only on type of lines are displayed in both fields on the screen. Result is low resolution and flickering.

Does anyone have any idea what can it be? Thanks.

It's completely undependent from temperature. It can sit for weeks and when i start it it shows black screen after boot screen. No difference, hot or not.
Fuses? I really don't know since the console itself work.

Basicaly everything works, but it freezes randomly.

DVD, Network, memory card, gamepad ports, infrared, all fine.

My random guess would be ROM, where actual firmware sits. Maybe bad blocks?

On my fat ps2 the Emotion Engine CPU had crack solder joints something like xbox 360 has. It would freeze up like you said but you hear sound still. I seen a video on youtube but i can't find it and it was the slim a guy was showing that had the problem too.

Mine would work after it wamed up and restart it. It was just the cold start up it had problems.

I would like to test memory, maybe that's when the problem is.
Do you know any RAM test app or a homebrew that use all 32 MB of RAM?

    You removed the chip??

I think some pin in bios or video decripter was affected.
Try resoldering those pins from installation.

The Playstation2 relies HEAVILY on buffering.

I mean, everything it does requires it to copy data from ROM to RAM before using the said data.

So such odd issues are usually caused by BAD RDRAM chips.
