    first of all tnx for your salutations...it was a really hard job to do as i spent many hours for all these tests...the thread now has over 2,000 views and only some replies that mean that the whole topic is good described as i had fear of before...

    @ ITMASTER & tickmaster: there is absolutely no need to add a resistor as to add ANY FIX in V13! Summ0nes fix only protects the coils and they're are protected perfectly by $ony's protection circuit as i confirmed...
    The resistor DOES NOT protect the laser diode itself even on the wide laser...
    the BEST laser diode protection is here as i updated my test .txt to this topic :

    Here is why the diode burns :

    The PStwo Laser has an automatic gain control called AGC...the AGC rises the current on bad reading media so the laser can read better...so it does on dvd blanks as they're not so good readible as originals...no matter if you use bad or good quality media...but on bad quality media the laser diode current gets too high in some state...if so it burns...the wide lasers burn more often coz' they're made with very poor quality from a worse chinese manufacturer...

    And here is how to fix it : "Works for V12 AND V13 !"

    Summ0ne...known for his economical tips ...gave me the plausible tip some weeks ago and it's the BEST way to protect the laser diode...under the laser there are 2 little Pots...just turn the DVD Pot a bit anticlockwise ! In metric i turn it one millimeter...in inches it is 0.040...it limits the maximum current comes from the AGC...from 2 months back i didn't get back any pstwo with a dead laser diode...

    Now i go on Vacation with my family for the next 2 weeks...take care...

    Is there a picture or diagram?

    i don't think laser diode burn is the issue for v12 ( not sure with v13) and we all know pot adjustment could always reduce/increase current. what i'm interested is the issue with v13 laser diode burn out while the coils are protected perfectly. anyone has experienced laser diode burn out with v13?

    so this is new fix for the laser diode burn on v13 and v12, but from what i remember reading some threads over ps2 sites adjusting pots makes the life of laser short... correct me if im wrong, so if this fix is working well, ill do it since i need new ps2.... i better get v13 so only the only fix i need to do is the 2 pots...

    You only have to do it on the DVD pot and not the CD pot.
    Premods starting from $200. Installs are $40.There is a 3 month warranty.email me at MaximGalkin@gmail.com for more info.

    Im totally new, but i only have a general question. Im buying a premod ps2 v13 real soon and i have the choice between two laser fixes (it comes with it so i have to get one installed) one is the summ0ne fix and the other is the comsoft slimline fix v4. Now, IM not sure that the place im buying form (xmodd.com) is up to date with the way summ0ne said to fix it as ou stated earlier. Now i know im getting it installed with the dms4pro, but i dont know about the fix. Please Help.

    Can you or have you measured the POT resistance before and after adjusting - it is not very accurate to say - turn the pot by this much - much better to suggest increasing the resistance across the pot by % to reduce the current...

    Reason I say this is that the pots can turn quickly or slowly before you even think that you have your screw driver inserted - and it makes it impossible to know your starting setting - hence taking a resistance reading before and after is better...

    What I have seen so far in POT settings is:

    wide laser:
    SPU3170 G CD = 268 ohms
    SPU3170 G DVD = 1k ohms

    Narrow Laser 1
    PVR802 CD = 432 ohms
    PVR802 DVD = 903 ohms

    Narrow Laser 2
    ob802 CD = 304 ohms
    ob802 DVD = 915 ohms

    So as you can see the wide laser was already adjusted higher than the narrow type but it still died... so may need to suggest a % increase from original factory settings...

    BTW - Good work!!!

    I've only measured 1 PS2 (4D):
    CD=354
    DVD=908

    - How do I tell what laser I have?
    - Do all v13 have wide lasers?
    - Are there comfortable pot values for wide and narrow or can they both operate at the same values?
    - Automan: counter clockwise 0.040 for both wide and narrow?

    EDIT: Just finished my first v13 w/MI. Working beautifully Hopefully nothing goes wrong

    Ok just did a silver slimline with wide laser, modded with MI
    Before adjustment:
    DVD=932 ohm
    CD=224 ohm

    First I went ahead and started by doubling the resistance of the DVD, well close enough, to 1786 ohms. Then I started throwing every dvd, originals and dvd+-r that i can find. All worked fine, until i put an original copy of GT4, which is dual-layar. Only had a boot rate of like 50%. Then I proceeded to adjust the pots again. This time i got it to 1417 ohms. GT4 worked fine. Started throwing more, and about 30+ later it was good.

    Getting late tonight, so tomorrow I may try for around 1600 ohms and see how it goes. In the end I'm trying to increase the resistance until GT4 starts having problems reading, and then setting the final resistance between that and the default resistance. One big problems with the pots are they are so small, that even if you turn it by like a hair's width, the resistance can change by 50 ohms.
