Is there some way to do this? I think my button is broken, but want to make sure before I buy a new one (and wait serveral weeks for it to arrive).

Yes there is. Here is my thread where I was in the same situation as you, but with a slimline version.
http://psx-scene.com/forums/f20/powe...-button-93333/ (Power on ps2 slim without power button?)
Basically for it be achieved you will need to bridge the + and - points on the mother board. Solder to one of the points and whenever you want to "press the power button" you would take the other end of the soldered wire and tap it on the other point.
Beware. If you do attempt the above you do risk some how messing up your PS2. I beleive I broke my because if it, or it could of been something else somewhat realated I think it uses voltages to use as a signal for what it does. (small voltage for restart, little more to goto stand by, and here is where i think i killed mine, if its more, something my FRY)(But then again I could be wrong.)

If you do not want to go through all that effort you can technically do an alternative to that. You could bridge the two pins used for power/reset on the white/blue ribbon cable, that works, well it should. I tried it before mine died so I dont see why not.
    Hope I help some
