I'm assuming that you have a SCPH-3000x (a v4 at that)
the battery is actually to keep the system settings and clock active while the console is powered down. much like a computer. the only difference is that it is placed there with the wires leading down to the mother board.
i doubt that it would cause a read error.
iv modded tons of xboxes,and ps2's and have fixed alot of computers and i dont know why there would be a battery in the dvd-rom drive.
try following the wires that come from the battery.if it leads to the motherboard then its like a bios battery.
and try cleaning the dvd lense with alcohol and a q-tip.i was having a read eror.and i cleaned it and it works fine now.
