Optical Digital Out Faulty?

does it have to be a ps2 one? or can I use common ones too?

You need a SPDIF light emitter (A special type of led used to transmit SPDIF/TOSHLINK signals)
A easy source for this part would be a dead DVD player with an optical out or even another PS2 ...

I'm glad you got your PS2 fixed. It's a ancient beast, but it is sure stronger than the newer ones. Keep it going
