PS2 Version: v7/8 (not 100% sure)
This may be a bit 'long winded' but I'm just trying to get as much information out there as possiable.
Recently I opened my PS2 to replace the DVD ribbon cable (I had opened it prior and had a slight tear/break in it.. so PS2 would randomly turn on/off). I dont recall if I tested it to work or not. Then the other day I had walked my friend through opening his PS2 (by opening mine) and noticed I had a game in the DVD drive.. I attempted to remove it and while sliding the tray out, it made a loud noise. I removed the DVD and slid the tray closed, put the PS2 back together and plugged it in and hit the eject button twice to slide the tray out then back in, went to bed thinking everything was fine. That brings me to yesterday....
Yesterday: I turn on the power to my PS2, eject the tray and pop in a PSX game, close it up and wait for the game to boot. nothing. go to the Browser expecting a Disc Read Error. nothing. Pop the tray out, check the CD (good.. clean.. no scratches, divits, teethmarks), place it back into the tray and turn the system off, wait a few seconds and power it back up hoping to boot directly from the CD. nothing. Try the same with a music CD. nothing. And again with a PS2 DVD. nothing. I also do not hear the CD/DVD spin up or down.
[everything tested was on pressed CD/DVD that you buy in stores]
I open up the PS2 yet again, take a look around the DVD drive, I dont see anything that jumps out at me (all the cables plugged in.. etc.. im no expert here) so I take the DVD out and pretend that I know what Im looking for, get bored and toss it back together. I think here is around the time where the laser slide wasnt moving right.. it just seemed very rough to move, like it was stuck. Anyway.. I get it all back together and power it on.. eject the try and it only sides out about 1/2 ~ 1 inch. Do the above, open it, look around, etc.. only I notice that I can't slide the tray out at all.. not even if I try. Lift the tray teeth off the gear teeth and it slides freely.. take the DVD tray out all the way and it wont slide back in.. after a few minutes of playing with it, I figure out how it works and get it set so that when the Laser elevation slider moves to one side it 'unlocks' and I'm able to slide the tray all the way out... and when I slide the tray back, it smoothly goes all the way in and causes the laser elevation slider to 'lock'.. just as it should. Now I'm getting all excited.. it -SHOULD- work now, plug the PS2 back in press the eject button and the tray slides all the way out! SUCCESS!!..... but no video and still no DVD activity.. I also notice the bottom (blue) LED from the eject button didnt light up/blink and I didnt hear the PS2 bootup sound.
Is my DVD drive just dead? Did I kill something inside my PS2?
yes you did you kill the laser for the drive...the same thing happen to mine too and i wasnt able to play any burn game or orginially so i notice it, It got to be the laser because the system work fine..now the only way to fix it is by gettin a new laser for you ps2 ask a prof to do it for you like Cran he do great work
but when I turn it on now, nothing happens.. I dont get any vid from the system. Fan goes on.. but nothing else. I dont have a problem replacing the laser (or whole DVD drive if need be) and doing it myself... I just need to know if my PS2 is salvageable or if I need to buy another premod (I can mod XBoxes no prob.. but PS2 scares me :-p)
