No DRE guide here? Well, which do you guys endorse?

I've got a couple SCPH-39001 consoles to repair. I've never done a DRE fix and I don't have a proper selection of media.
Until recently, my niece's could read original games (assumedly only DVD5) and a few DVD movies (when she said "Ace Ventura" was one, I actually recalled that it was a DVD5 disc ). I take that to mean that it only reads DVD5 discs. Funny, all the old guides still talk about their color versus what they really are as if we don't know (psst: "Blue" discs are PS2 CDs, right? ). That said, I can only test DVD9 with DVD videos and CD audio discs for CD-ROM. It still has the warranty seal, so if anyone thinks it's worth sending to Sony, let me know. BTW, is it still possible to get them to fix this for free?
Mine can't run any discs at all and it has always been that way. In fact, I specifically looked for one that couldn't read discs (tested HD Loader on it). The warranty seal is gone and Idon't know what has been done to it (AFAIK, the previous repair attempt could have trashed the laser/drive). The only reason I'm interested in repairing it now is because I'm going to be looking at my nieces while I'm at it. Might as well do both.
That said, I did try a CD cleaning kit and the PS2 never read the disc (I doubt the lens moved to the brushes). I also used a compressed air duster, despite my concern that more dust could settle on the laser. Anyway, those two did get it to read DVD5 games again, but for how long? I'm still interested in at least getting it to read DVD9 videos so that I can be sure that the laser is in better shape (I told her not to use it for DVDs).
It's not that I can't find other repair guides, it's just that they all seem so... outdated and incomplete. The "Blue/Gold/Silver" terminology isn't what I mean. For example, there is no guide that covers pot, cog, voltage, lens, lubrication, etc tweaking including when to do which. Which do you guys endorse?
I always used one from Ultimate Console Guides. I'm attaching a sample of the guide. It is a good 70 mb of guide and its quality and simple stuff.
Thanks. It seems torough, but is it more than what is can find in a typical public guide?
