You'll need a laser fix if you have a V12-V14. The newest version, V15 (Model Number SCPH 77xxx) Does not need the fix.
So if you have a V12-V14 you'll need a fix.

only v12 slim ps2 needs a fix i have never used them on v13 or any higher and never had a problem i beleive there is a thread on here somewhere stating that v13 have been tested and found Sony already modified the board......
but search a little more and double check 1st
