New 90006 model not reading DVDs

After looking around for a couple hours, I have not been able to dig up anything about repairs or anything on SPCH-9000* models. I recently imported a 90006 model which was a bit of an oops since i live in the US, but luckily I already had a step up transformer. Now the main problem. Everything turns on and works fine. It is basically doing the same stuff my old playstation used to do where it will read CDs just fine but no DVDs. I am not trying to load anything weird. It just plain will not read NTSC J or even All region DVD movies. I thought I would check here first since it is brand new but I could save a lot of time and money (overseas shipping) if I could repair it myself. I am unsure weather the resistance range on the laser would be the same as any old PS2 (my other console is a v4 or something old like that). My other idea was that the converter was not pushing enough power to the console but since I am going from 110v - 220v, but I would assume it just wouldn't turn on or the disc would not spin. I'm just looking for some further info before I go opening up a brand new console with a completely different layout than I am used to.

First off, I believe you don't need to use a transformer. The PS2 has it built in. Check the bottom of the console, does it say 110/220v? I know all the other PS2s and PS3 did automatically choose the right voltage not requiring a transformer. Now for the DVDs, does it play DVD games fine? If it plays audio CDs but not DVDs i think it has something to do more with the reigon code rather than the laser. Your model is fairly new and shouldn't fail out of the box.
