I spent a couple of months looking for another cheap PS2 when I was at a friends house and he told me that his PS2 died and he just bought another. He gave me his dead one and it turned out to be a v12. Great!

It boots up and all but the laser appears dead. (laser lens appears dark). The laser moves , focusing goes up and down, the red laser blinks and the cd/dvds spin. So hopefully this means that it is just a laser problem.
I am going to order a PVR-802W laser to replace the KHM-430 laser. This should work without running lens changer right? Richspsx parts has the entire unit (sled and laser) for only $10 more. Is the entire unit worth it? Pros and cons?

I have a Neofix XIV (came with my mod-chip that is in a v4).

Is this board enough to protect the new laser when I get it? I also see that there is a subzero board and people mention the comsoft v4 board. I saw a post by tonysmod (I think) that says that the neofix does not require cutting a trace on the motherboard.

This question has been asked before but none of the other post really got a clear answer. I have the Neofix XIV already but if it is crap them I don't mind spending another $8 or so to protect the $20 laser. It all works out for a month or so then I want an installer to put in a CC2.0 SLE and HD combo.

You can just buy the laser alone, no need for a sled motor and tray. Neofix should do the job for now, but Subzero/Comsoft is preferred.
