Need a anwser on what to do. –
I have a PS2 30001R modded with a Duo 2 SE. Recently my laser has been acting up with some of the games ive burned. Some of the games like Gran Turismo 4 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 skip horribly on video scenes (think watching DSL-Cable quality on 56K), some of my games that have used to read ok or fine now do either: Dont boot and the ps2 acts like theres no disc at all, Pass the clouds and show the ps2 logo and then go back to the manger screen for a few sec and give me RSOD. Oddly CD-R games, orginals both CD and DVD and DVD Movies work just fine. So heres what I could possibly do: 1. Get a NEW laser for my 4+ year old PS2 Cost $60-75 Or 2. Get a NEW PS2 v14 model, get a new modchip (like a Crystal Chip, MI, Ghost 2, DMS4, etc....) and have it installed for $40. Cost $130 + $40 + $40 = around the $200 area. SO what should I do about my situation? ALL games have been burned on Office Depot DVD-Rs (Ritek F1), Phillips DVD-Rs (CMC AE1), Verbaitm DVD-Rs (MCC), H-P CD-Rs and Philips CD-Rs and used ONES and Ashampoo Burning Studio 6 to backup and burn the games.
Try blowing the dust off and out of the laser with compressed air and then cleaning the lens with alchohol and a Q-tip.
This may be all you need.
The modder that installed my Duo 2 SE cleaned my laser for free. He cleaned both laser heads with alcohol and q-tips and reajusted my slant screw. He also said he was able to play all of this games fine even on cheap media (KHyperMedia, Opitium, No Label stuff etc...) and said he played GTA3 for a good hour which i have the same game backed up on a Philips DVD-R and it would pass the clouds and ps2 logo and then go back to the manger screen and then give me RSOD. My other GTA games (Vice City, San Andreas, and LCS) all burned on Phililps DVD-Rs all will either sit there and not read, do the same as GTA3 or just stright up give me a RSOD. So I have a bit of a delima here.
Buy whatever media he is using.
How long ago was it modded? How long ago did the modder test it for you?
Chips make the laser work it HARD, chipped systems burn them faster period. If repair is needed, you may be able to adjust the white cog at the back of the drive, or the asthmus screw (the one on the laser at the non-threaded guide) to get it where it can read your media again. If you tweak stuff, mark it's original position just in case. If it still needs work on the laser, you can tweak the dvd pot, but that will likely burn the laser if you're a noob. Those all help you postpone the inevitable laser replacement for a while.
It was modded probally about two months or so ago. Bought some Verbatium DVD-Rs and they are working just fine. I just downt understand that some of RiTeks that has worked fine before, dont boot any more or some of the ritek dvd-rs ive burned games on (like Tekken 5) work fine. BUT i had put my DVD5 version of Gran Turismo 4 burned on RiTek DVD-R (Office Depot) mind you worked great, loaded good, and played the intro (which is laser killer intro) played beautifully NOW skips like 56k internet video with alot of short stops and takes longer to get through the video than normal. Tokyo Xtreme Racer 3 did the same effect as GT4 and burned on the same brand and type of media.
stick with the better media if you want your laser to last.
