how can i fix my ps2?

i just got a ps2 off of my cousin for $50, it came with all the cables & 120gb hd with several games already on it. the reason i got it so cheap was this:

there is a ribbon that goes from the reset/eject button to a little port on the board. that port is plastic & white, & connects to the board at 7 little points all side by side in a line on the side of the board, each one about 1mmX1mm or .5mmX.5mm. that white port broke off, & my question to you guys is, is it possible to solder a new one of those ports back on, hook everything up & work? if not, my question is will a new board work regardless of version or does it have to be the same exact version as the old board?

the part that broke off is the large white piece in the upper right hand corner of the board in this picture.
