    I have a v7 PS2 that I modded w/a Messiah2 about 3 years ago.

My kids have just informed me it won't read discs. Initially, it would only read CDs, and even then it took a while to load. After a bit of trouble shooting and adjusting Pots, cogs, and screws, here's what I got:

    1) PSX - reads Original & CDR
    2) PS2 CD - Reads original & CDR
    3) PS2 DVD - Reads Original, does not read DVDR
    4) DVD Movie - Plays originals, does not play DVDR

I've adjusted the pots and azimuth a bunch, but this is the best I can get it. I'm think my laser's about had it, but wanted a second opinion from the experts. Other and doing a bunch of mods 2 years ago, I'm pretty much out of the PS2 scene.

From what little I've read here, the v7 is a pretty solid version for modding compared to the newer models.

Should I shell out the $50-$60 for a replacement laser, or just pull out the Messiah 2, Ebay it & put the proceeds towards a new PS2?

Also, other than Ebay, anyone know a good source for a new v7 laser?

The fact that you can now read dvd games after adjusting the pots etc leads me to believe that your laser is the problem. I've replaced lasers on v7's before after a lot of dvdr backups have been played in it. You are correct that the v7 is a solid machine, but playing backups does put a strain on the laser. If I were you I'd keep the v7 and just buy a new laser.

*edit* a good place for a new laser is www.richspsxparts.com *edit*
