If you` ll open the console, clean up and lubricate optical unit(dont abuse touching the lens, just a smooth cleaning).
Thats the first in this cases.

Ps2 laser has 2 diferents frecuencys, one for DVD , other for CD.
DVD one is the firs to decrease, so you can run cds anyway till the end.
If you look at the bottom of your lens, youll see twoo regulators(one for each frecuency).

Take a tester and set it on DIODE/BUZZ, and measure each regulator.
Then regulate dvd one according what you measured.
Fat models: ussually 1200/1400 from factory, set it at 1000/1050
Slim models: ussually 900/1000, just calculate 10% of its value and set it down.
You can go to 800/850 easily, no problem, but gradually and testing every time wiht dvds

Never kill the resistors doing it ramdomly, use a tester! An a good magnifier, movements are very, very small(1/4 ussually).

If you have a 50 fat model, becarefull, you could burn optical system to dead, it takes 2/3 seconds. Take it to a technician and fix that problem before nothing. Same thing with slim 70 model.
Other models are fixed from factory.

After the laser is powered, the big thing is to calibrate unit in fat models.
White wheel and black litlle screw are your new enemys now.
Read a manual for that, the idea is center the laser angle exactly 90š to the disc surface, isn ot easy, be PATIENT.

Calibrating is not possible on a slim model, just regulate the laser softly till have a good dvd reading.

Use ALLWAYS clean and non scratched dvds, as a mirror, laser needs reflects nice to return with data. UNDERSTOOD??

Well, if i forgot something ill tell you later, this is a daily process to me at my work and you need every detail to do it yoursefl. No fear. Just remenber the fix if its your case.

IF it doesnt work anyway, buy another lens. Its time.

AND TELL YOUR MODEL WHEN POSTING, PLEASE!!!

    SALUDOS.

Get the right replacement laser unit....
Either itīs the PWM802(KHM430) or the Wide one.And you canīt take a Wide in a console that had the PWM type and not the other way around either.

This is the FIX to prevent RS2004 burnout:
    http://www.picsystems.net/fix_v12_v13.htm

you need 2 1n4148 diodes, (1 100k RESISTOR, and the other things you see are optional) and some soldering skills.
DO THIS BEFORE TOUCH THE LENS.

    Laser power regulators picture :

This is a PVR model, if you have a SPU model its basically the same, youll read to the right of the resistors(they are circular):"DVD" and "CD".
Clockwise to increase laser power(just a little!!!), never bruteforce.

Yup, replacing the whole laser is the concrete solution.
Adjusting the potentiometers on a laser will only be a temporary solution, as that won't hide the fact that the laser is already a little worn out.
    Unmodified SCPH-77006 with SM 3.6
SCPH-39006 with M-chip modchip, SCPH-10281 NA and refurb Seagate 80GB HDD
SCPH-10000 v1.00 with SCPH-10190 PCMCIA NA and SCPH-20400 HDD unit

OK, if you are "0" then replace the lens.

You have to know your unit model:
PVR 802 / KHM 430 have the same form:
    http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_oESlqk8gjP...r_pvr_802w.jpg

    "SPU" unit :
    http://www.ocioconsolas.com/images/f...s-ps2-slim.jpg

You have to extract the optical unit by removing 2 very smal screws supporting 1 clilindric rail, need a small cross screwdriver.
DONT LOOSE THE PARTS, 2 screws and 2 metal pieces(there are too 2 little plastic pieces under the rail,1 each extreme).
    PVR/KHM UNIT:
    http://www.spainsellers.com/images/p...000x-7500x.jpg

    SPU UNIT:
    http://img.alibaba.com/img/pb/420/12...127420_957.jpg

Disconect CAREFULLY the ribbon cable from de unit (there is a sensible plastic holding it)
    http://images.villageorigin.com/w/in...&c=de&z=de&f=0

Now extract the metallic arm from the unit(another small screw).

OK NOW PUT THE NEW ONE
    - Connect the ribbon to the new unit, screw the arm, insert the rail(check the litle plastics), put 2 metal holders and screws. DONE.

BUT there is a problem to solve BEFORE:
A new laser unit has a protection youll have to take off:
    http://www.console-spares.co.uk/cata...r-802w-asp.JPG
    http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:A...V6d2K2Uspw&t=1
Use a solder iron to remove that solder bridge and your laser its ready to work or ask for it to the seller.

AFTER ALL , LUBRICATE WHIT SOLID VASSELINE THE MOVING PARTS.
BE SURE THE LENS IS CLEAN BEFORE CLOSE THE CONSOLE.

Can you see?? its easy to say DO THIS, DO THAT, im an old consoles technician and i know is not SO EASY for a newb.
Go ahead and do it, but i said TO YOU, that model its too sensitive to burnout, keep your dvds clean. Avoid CDs.

    SALUDOS!!!
