Ok, so I just installed a crystal chip 1.1 in my v14 GH-040-52 NTSC console and now the component that slides the laser hammers up against the cd spinning component when I power it up and nothing is read. So, any help with this problem would be greatly appreciated. Is this a problem with my installation of the chip, or have I somehow busted the cd/dvd drive assembly? The laser slides freely when the unit is powered down, should it be doing that?

Ps2 drive's have a zero switch that the laser will bump into so it can determine its position and knows where to go when reasding discs.

Ps2's have it on the pcb of the spindle motor, slimlines, however, have it on their laser unit's pcb. If the switch is faulty the sled motor will continue to move back but doesnt stop so you hear the scraping sound of the sled guide wich is skipping over the sled bar.

Mostly a non working switch has something to do with a laser cable not plugged in correctly. Especially(???sry, dutch), check the ribon cable in the lens unit.

Thanks DJGAIT, that solved the problem. One of the ends of it mustn't have been in good. Almost kinda embarassing that I didn't figure that one out myself.
