The most common case when a game can be using a screen format 'too big' for your TV screen is if you are trying to use a PAL game with an NTSC TV set, but if your console is also an NTSC type, then this would require some kind of console 'mod' (either hard modchip or a 'softmod'), in order to boot a PAL game disc.
If we are to help you well, you must first describe exactly what you are using, and how you are using it.
We want to know the product code of your PS2.
Something like "SCPH-xxxxx", where the "xxxxx" part consists of 5 numerical digits.
For example: my European v15 PSTwo has product code "SCPH-77004"
We also want to know the product code of your game.
Something like Sxxx_yyy.zz", where "xxx" consists of three letters, while "yyy" has three numerical digits, and "zz" two such digits.
If it is the kind of problem I suspect that it is, then using the homebrew tool GSM can help you, by forcing the game display to NTSC. But as yet you have not said anything to let us know if you can launch homebrew software or not, so we don't know if you can use it.
So we also need to know exactly what boot methods you have available for game backups and/or homebrew software.
Once we have the necessary information, we may be able to help you better.
