I have my fat PS2 with FMCB 1.8 and flip-top cover for swap magic. I recently tried to play a homebrew Dual Layer game but it just doesn't load, and when I try a authentic Dual Layer, it still doesn't load but it doesn't make that awful noise, just some clicking. It isn't the disk problem, I tried both at a friend's house on his PS2 with slide
r tool and both of them worked.

I would apreciate some help on this matter.

As I'm a n00bie I can't post links so just search on youtube for : PS2 Dual Layer disc reading problem, I need Help! BTW: My PS2 has a Rockstar logo just so you go to the right video.

Your problem sound like the laser/motor is broken on your ps2

For my setup (ps2 slim) I use FMCB 1.8B and Open Ps2 loader 0.8 to load my own backups , in my experience the lasers on ps2 slims are not the very best and thus I run any single or dual layer backup game over a network share. Sparing the laster and avoiding busting the motor/laser by swaping around alot

If I need to run any emulators I usually keep everything on the memory cards, again avoiding using the laser.

A ps2 network adapter should be possible to get cheaply on ebay for your fat (avoid getting the pirated ones as they lack a network port)

So you either get a ps2 slim that is made before march 2008 for Free Mcboot exploit or yo u get a offical network adaptor for your ps2 fat , then you can either run your dual layer homebrew of the harddrive if you connect one to the adaptor or you run it over a network share

You just need to decide wich works out the best for you , getting a ps2 slim or getting the adapter for your current system.

    Kind Regards

It still runs authentic and homebrew single layer games, it only does that sound with dual layer disks.

Well if the same disc runs perfect on your friends ps2 and it will not on yours , still think something might be busted , if its the ps2 or the disc I cant say for 100% sure
I am not a Technican so I cant tell you specificly what is wrong with your ps2 , but if you dont want to use any other method then using discs, either you have your machine handed over to a repair shop , or get another ps2 that works better.

    Regards

The clicking sound is made by the laser eye moving up and down, failing to get a sharp focus on the disc.

The disc needs to be cleaned, the laser might need to be cleaned, and/or the laser needs to be replaced.

@Dreamwebber : The slimlines (Other than the SCPH-70000 series) have the best lasers - compared to the FAT PS2s.

The console probably isn't able to get sufficient grip on the disc, and spins it's rotor without spinning the disc properly.

Try adding tape to the transparent hub of the disc to thicken the disc, to give the console better grip.

too SP193: Thanks for letting me know, basicly was under the impression all of them 70000,75000,77000 had the same problem

And it was actually your external harddrive loader that sparked my intresst back to the ps2 , unfortunate I have yet been able to find a ps2 fat with firewire

So I had to go with slims with nic port for my discless needs

Love the work you did on FMCB 1.8c installer

    Kind Regards

I still have the problem and I'm unable to get a new PS2 and/or a network adapter, I tried to glue the disc but it made no progress. It also came through my mind that the problem could be because of the height of the driver (as I mentioned before, it was modded to swap magic) and not spinning propperly the disc making those scratchy noises.

Probably. That's why I had given you the advice to add tape to the disc to thicken it.
I used sticky tape that was about a millimeter thick, and had to add 2 layers of it to give my ex-SCPH-39001 console sufficient grip on my Sony CD-R discs (And before that, it really made that horrible and loud scrapping sound that your console made).

If you still have the original parts of the console, maybe you could put them back into the console and try again.

What is your console's model anyway? Since you couldn't even get an original double-layer DVD game to boot, the laser might have been weakened too.

    No problem.
Actually, to be precise, it's not really the lasers of the SCPH-70000, SCPH-50000 and SCPH-55000 series of consoles that are bad, but the hardware the controls the laser.

Sony had added sabotage to the drive MECHAnics CONtrollers (MECHACONs) of all the PS2s, up to the SCPH-75000 series, in a bid to deter people from modifying the console and playing with burned discs.

The SCPH-70000 series had similar sabotage too, but with an additional actual hardware design fault.

    Thanks.

However, you might not want to use the iLink port, unless you are very sure that you can get an enclosure with an Oxford 934 chipset.
Other chipsets seem to be incompatible, as of today.

The worst so far is the Prolific PL-3507.
