What are you using for a desktop magnifier? Most of these on ebay are 5x and are illuminated. But I would think that at least a 10x and possibly more would be best to look for solder splashes/mishaps, etc. Thanks

Magnification power is a question of personal preference mostly - I generally haven't used one at all, but then again I don't do PS2 mods. It's hard to know what you want until you actually try one because it's very easy to over/underestimate what a given power will actually look like. Personally I think good lighting (especially having an extra light source that can easily be moved to hit the board from many angles) is more important than magnification, because a shadow at 10x magnification is still a shadow...
i agree with Ex-cyber a 5x is more than good enough as you only ned to look through it to find faults, i find it weird trying to line up the iron through the magnifier.
better off having good light as said above and just get a normal magnifying glass. imo of course
