I was doing a simple lens clean of a SCPH 30001 v4 with rubbing alcohol. I didn't remove anything deeper than taking the cover of the tray off and cleaning the laser lens.

I put the tray back on and held it down with my hand, plugged the system in and fired her up. Worked fine and booted up my game first try, fixed my DRE problem. Unplugged and put CD case screws in. Plugged it back in and when I plugged the power plug into the wall the outlet sparked (and continues do to so every time I do this) and now my PS2 gets no power.

So to summarize, all I did was put my CD tray's screws in and now I get no power. Reset/eject ribbon doesn't seem to be broken -- I didn't even touch it during this time. What could have gone wrong here and how can I determine what needs to be replaced?

If you removed the cover, you "touched" the eject cable. You do know how to check the big fuse on the power supply board, don't you?

3 things I imagine you could have done to it:

1- Disconnected the flat cable from the main board.
2- Punctured the flatcable with a screw or plastic pin on the case by accident.
3- Broke the middle track (gnd) by bending it while manipulating the PS2 unit, by accident.

The 3 will lead you into a unit which gets power but doesn't lit the red light. A pico-fuse on the motherboard labeled "PS1" protects the standby circuit. It usually blows when the flat cable gets shorted by a puncture.

Good luck figuring this one out. Any doubts I am here to try helping
