can ps2 function w/o dvd player?
can ps2 function w/o dvd player? –
just like the title say's......
not sure what version I have but the dvd tray and drive is not functioning,
its either got no power or its broken, laser seems to be intact, doesn't looked
burned out. I get power and the tv screen has a slight flicker when power is turned on, seems like it wants to start but then it stays black and has no sound.
the reset/eject button works partway, the reset (red/green) button only
lights up the blue eject doesn't. I read somewhere that the cable can be
easily damaged or the switch itself is bad.
my question is... can the system function w/o the dvd being powered on?
should I be able to see the ps2 logo splash screen even though the dvd isn't
working? I'm trying to isolate the problem before I start throwing parts at it.
If I only need new reset cable and switch, that would be great if its the motherboard or fuses then I'm going to have to learn how to check fuses.
need some input. thanks.
maybe something's wrong with ribbon cable that connects dvd drive to the motherboard? make sure all cables are ok

PS2 without DVD drive –
When I repaired a v3 console (no video/sound), it was one of the ribbon cables that were damaged.
Try to measure with a multimeter or simulair that the ribbon cables are working.
For the DVD, the v3 worked without the DVD connected. Not 100% sure, but I think I tried a v9 without the DVD connected, and it also started.
Yes the ps2 can boot up without the drive.
Test the motherboard fuses
Check the BA chip (pin 8)
thanks for all the great suggestions.
if the dvd ribbon cable is bad, then no matter what, I should
be able to see the ps2 splash screen w/ sound when powered on.
I stripped it it down to the bare motherboard and it
looks like theres was some resoldering going on around the
BA chip (dvd). even if this has gone bad,
I should be able to see something when its booted
regardless if dvd is functioning.
I"m wondering if the motherboard is bad?
does anybody have a V7 board they want to sell,
because there's no way I can solder a new BA chip or fuses.
i'm good at soldering but not that good.
any ideas. thanks
