To cut a long story short I have a PAL (AU) V12 slim line SPU3170 G wide laser in a customers station that has had its' tracking coil go open circuit not short circuit.

I would suggest that this is a Sony manufacturing fault... (or extended play by the customer of GTA:SA on poor quality media)

To fix the problem I first bought the PVR802 narrow lens only, from Divineo china discovering on delivery that it is around 4mm shorter... i.e. not wide enough to fit between the guide rails of the existing laser...

Not very happy as they were supposed to be universal... I still continued and bought a full optical block this time to get around this problem - again from Divineo china... (this one comes complete with its' own rails and motors)

I installed it last night (yes I removed the shorting links) coils are fine still - 5.1 and 5.7 ohms. The disk spins now (which it did not before) but no game loading... no data recognition on either CD or DVD media...

Browser still appears and works as per normal but as if no disk has been loaded.

    Checked the old laser pots:
    SPU3170 G CD = 268 ohms
    SPU3170 G DVD = 1k ohms

New lasers (Lens and full block lens)
    PVR802 CD = 432 ohms
    PVR802 DVD = 903 ohms

    ob802 CD = 304 ohms
    ob802 DVD = 915 ohms

My question is - should I play with the pots?

Should I remove the Summ0ne fix 4.7K on the focus coil?
I have done them in the early days just using the 560 ohms on the tracking coil and they are still working fine...

Do I need to remove the entire summ0ne fix to get these new lasers to work? (or is that to dangerous?)

It is just that from what I have read people who have issues with the summ0ne fix don't even get the CD to spin. My issue seems to be more that it just can't read the disks...

Or is it just another bad buy and is the PVR802 laser totally not compatible with the SPU3170 G laser based stations?

Please anyone who has installed one of these replacement lasers - did they work first go?

Did you have to adjust anything?

Help? (Thread stuck for now - as answers may be useful to other members)

I would not play with the pots you should be able to read CDR/CD media at least with NO adjustment at all if the lens was the original problem. Most likley the Mech cd/dvd controller has had it and no matter what you do you will most likley not be able to repair.

Have anyone succesfully replaced a SPU3170 with a PVR802? I got four units with SPU3170 and they don't read dvd anymore.

try using the Lens changer program.
You have to rename The File for the laser type you want to use to backup.nvm
    1. Extract zip file into your lenschanger folder
    2. start lenchanger program
3a. backup your nvm by pressing r1. rename it so you know whos's pstwo it was, and so that you can rename one of the nvm files in the rar to backup.nvm
3b. rename the proper nvm in your case, the pvr 802 to backup.nvm
    4. press l1 it will open up the backup.
    5. press start and it will reprogram to the laser type you chose.

I did this and it works.

Thanks go to DAMPRO for releasing this nice application.

Yes but if its not reading at CD based media at all this might be difficult. Unless the chip installed has dev1 and you install the laserchanger.elf to a memcard via another machine, I guess this would work.

Yeah I have had the same experience, but shadow is saying it wont so I guess try and adjust the laser or do what I suggested to boot the laserchanger.elf

well I have had a couple experiences where the laser would spin but not read.
It was usually Bad smd connection where the someone fix was applied or the ribbon was not seated properly.
I have tried 5 of divineos PVR lasers and they all worked, without tweaking the pots.

    Anyone else done this?

Yeah so far this probably wont work for me as mentioned neither CD nor DVD boot...

Chip has Dev mode - it is a DMS3+

    What is the likelyhood that
the Mech cd/dvd controller has had it and no matter what you do you will most likley not be able to repair.
Also I have no memory cards for the PS2 as I don't own one (don't have time to play anymore ) So can the CD changer software run entirely from the CD or do you need a memory card to get it to work?

How often has an upgrade failed and required you to reload the back up of the EEPROM?

Not sure how that would even help having a back up as if you program incorrectly wouldn't the laser fail and thus no longer be able to boot the software from the CD to restore the back-up?

And the file you have attached - that has the replacement firmware so that the machine should work ok with the PVR802?

(BTW thanks for the replies guys! once again proving that PS2-scene is the best place for technical help - even for the more indepth questions!!)

BTW your getting ripped off by divineo.. you can get those lasers much much cheaper from "other" sellers.
