Hi, I have a v5 plain ps2 and alas, I have opened it to check out the soldering points. I have fixed it back together again (i haven't soldered anything, just checked) and when playing Tekken 5, the noisy ps2 has silenced itself for once. Yay, I thought, until 20 minutes the tv went all black showing no output and the lights on the ps2 blinked red so I turned it off.

I then found the ps2 to have killed the fan (supposedly) because after dissecting it, the wire connecting the fan to the ps2 has 2 melted points. I have ordered a new fan to try and fix it. The ps2 still runs fine without the fan though (and I mean everything, from ps1, dvd, ps2 except network adapter in which I don't have), for up to 20 mins, so I think the cause is that I stupidly didn't place the fan wire back in place correctly. Is this true? I'll post again once I know if the ps2 is fully alive again.

without a fan your ps2 will die quickly and shutdown. if you keep on using it without a fan it might die permanently.

What type of fan goes into ps2?
It has a standard diameter like the ones in pcs?
Can it be changed into a silent one?
I'm pretty much annoyed by the level of noise it makes after few years of (over)using.

    1) No idea. It depends on your ps2 version and as I'm no electrician, all I can say is that the fan has some plug coming out of it that fits in the board XD.
    2) Smaller diameter if you ask me.
    3) I wish! There are hardly any suppliers out there that make fans for PS2s

Back to my issue, I ordered a replacement fan and should be coming shortly. I will post up the results...

OMG, I have the fan in hand now. Yes, the new one. I sped up to the sick playstation, fixed it in and...? WTF, it doesn't fit?! The wire was too short, yet I told by the supplier that it will fit my VERSION 5 PS2. It doesn't...

Well now the good news. I managed to insert the fan in the most unusual way (cannot be played like this) anyway and turned on the ps2. The new fan didn't go...

SO WHAT'S WRONG WITH MY PS2? Isit the fuse? Instructions? What? what? WHAT? I am completely frustrated and confused. Please reply, anyone out there asap!!!!

Thanks for the reply, but wtf is the ps7? I believe it's a fuse in the motherboard. It's firmly tight on the board. Please don't tell me that I have to de-solder it! I am the devil with the soldering iron, breaking all electric appliances within reach XD, as I have NO experience of soldering what so ever! Is there a simpler way of replacing it? Say use some sort of a clipper?

Erm, and except from taking it to the repair shop, because they charge expensively!

You can also just solder a couple wires to the USB port. This is what I had to do because the plug for the fan broke off the mobo and it's just a huge pain in the ass to solder it back on. So I hooked up an 80mm fan and screwed it to the back of the PS2. Works great!
