    Hey there.

I bought a new PS2 after the previous one, well, didn't quite make it. So instead of trying to be a smartass with anything at the momment, I figured I'll ask about this. It originally had a HD7 laser unit installed, which I took out and replaced it with the brand new KHS 400C laser unit I bought for the previous one, because according to the previous owner it was failing, and I heard some warnings about the HD7 laser. Right now the laser lights up and it checks the disks, but I get a Disk Read Error on anything I put in. This console is also modchipped with a chip that I'd guess is some Magic Pro modchip, the console is the same version as the previous one, a 5004 one.

So what should I do at this point? I figured I'd ask, instead of breaking another console.

I'm quite sure that one can't run lensechanger on a SCPH-50000 series because of the Dragon MECHACON it has, so you have to use the same type of laser it originally had (KHS-400C -> KHS-400C, or Sanyo HD7 or KHS-400R -> Sanyo HD7 or KHS-400R). If your original laser was a R-type laser (Sanyo HD7 or KHS-400R), that is the reason why it isn't working.

Personally, I love this HD7 laser that my SCPH-39006 has, as it seems to be able to read all sorts of discs which only the SCPH-50000 series is able to.

You have to use Lenschanger program in order to modify the EEPROM data allowing to change the lens type.

EDIT: ops... SP193 was faster than me...

There is a 1.2b version of Lenschanger which is able even to operate in the slims models.

    Thanks for your responses.
Can I use Lenschanger without connecting to the PC, simply through a USB flash drive?

Okay, so since I couldn't run lenschanger, because I didn't have a network adapter for the PS2, neither could I read a CD disk, I had to buy a new laser that would actually work. I got a new KHS 400R laser, and installed it into my PS2, but so far it still gives me a disc read error. By the way, I did the Romeo mod on the LA chip, and it seems to have been successful. I've connected the pin to the 5V point under the PS8 fuse. Could I be missing something here? With the 400R it obviously behaved differently, spinning the disks more and harder at times, but it still seems to have trouble reading them.

    Any suggestions?

Edit: Also the laser didn't come with antistatic blobs, is it possible they removed these prior to shipping, or was I given a used one?

This is exactly what the laser looks like:
