by moving the pot you have forced more current through the laser diode and probably fried it so putting it back to where it was will make no difference now, the tic tic tic sound you here is the laser trying to focus and forcing more current through trying to do so making it even worse, did you adjust the pot using a multimeter or just by turning and not measuring because the tiniest movement can adjust by many hundred ohms and you never adjust more than 50 ohms at a time, if its not stuffed I would be surprised.
unfortunately the laser is a precision piece of hardware and can die very easily, a new laser will fix the problem if you want to go to the expense.

50 ohms can do it too. If you were already at the end of your lifespan there wasn't much you could have done. You did say you got it cheap and used, therefore you can't know exactly what it's been thru and the fact that it's an R system running a C laser tells me it's been thru a lot already. You're flashed to use a cheaper laser, it's still cheaper than a new system to replace it. Pot tweaking is not for the inexperienced, it's a very delicate adjustment that may or may not work. I always tell someone I can try to tweak it, but there's still the possibility they'll need a new laser.
