    the 400c in my v7 is not actually dead but it hardly ever manages to read a game (disk read error) i have ajusted the cog in evry position and also ajusted the pot. so iv come to the conclusion that i need a new laser but then i came accros these at divineo and on ebay Here would this fix my problems. finally how do you test the couil resistance on a 400c

    i am checking this days if and where best to buy this ... after some testing with about 20 400c dead lens i got here , i have found out that most of the time (or only in my case) even if lens loop coils are not good even if i replace with good loops , lens still not working (guess diodes are dead as well)
    anyway here is a link to a nice page ....
    http://www.cyber-mag.com/station/laserV9.htm
    i am looking to buy new diodes ,from testing most of 400c lens got good loops and still not working (dead diode?) and the onces with bad coils , also got dead diodes ... maybe 1 kill the other while burning ?
    if you find a nice place to buy them
    let me know

    am i right in thinking the diode can only be working or dead which means it cant be my problem if the laser is just not very good. Iv got the thing to read neely evry time now but loading times are slow so the laser is very week. is there anything that i can do to make that laser good again without spending £30/$52 on a new one.

    there is something strange about it that i have just found out. what resistance can you go down to until the laser dies because it seems extreemly strange that on this one i have ajusted it that much it now mesures only 188 ohms on the dvd pot and about 300 on the cd and the laser hasnt died. Could the wrong voltage be goin to the laser?

    is ther any way to test the voltage goin to the laser (I DONT MEAN THE POTS)

    I am interested in installing a laser loop for a v4, but people in this forum say that even still the laser does not work because of the diode?? Isn´t the diode included in the loop? Can someone please explain this to me as I am confused and a new laser lens is simply too expensive and because I am a chip installer I believe I can save loads of $$$ if the loops are a good solution. Just how difficult is it to install a loop and is it worth it?

    The laser current is controlled by the DVD drive CPU. It reads the value on the pot but it's not the only thing used by it to define the real current that go to the pot. There's also some information on the PS2 eeprom about the laser and it's that plus the pots that define the laser power.

    About the laser coils, it's position is critical. I never remove the metalic pad on the laser. I remove the black screw in the middle of the plastic holder of the lens assembly and change only that. You should be careful at the time of tightening the screw to don't put weight on the mechanism. If you do it will bend and the lens will lose it's position. So changing lens is hard. A missaligned drive might read CDs and not DVDs so not all the time the lasers are blown. Crank up the pots is not a real solution.

    i don't think you could profit much even if you could successfully replace the loop. a lot of the lasers died becuase of the diodes are too weak. although many v9/v10 lasers were burnt at coils and you might replace them with a good loop but it's not an easy process especially those HD7 loop. it's easy to install but adjustment is like pain in the ass. replacing 400C loop is also tricky you need to take special care to the loop and damping meterial or the laser will not focus/track.

    So if I understand correctly, the diode is not included in the new loop? Lasers that die from long-time usage must be substituted with new ones?

    yes, the loop does not include laser diode.

    A bent lens assembly (Pretty common on the crappy Sony lasers, not only the PS2 suffer of this) might cause effects on the DVD reading. It might lead to a false weak laser diagnosis. Thinking the pot will be the magic solution the guy then crank it up and boom: Fried laser...

    I've seen this happen a lot with PS2s which misteriously stopped reading DVD discs. You carefuly inspect the PS2 case and then find that one of the edges are squashed ! lol (Obviously the owner dropped it.)
