Why are there so many versions of PS2?

What are the differences between all the PAL versions??
if any? i.e. why is there a version 4 and a version 5, 6, 7 etc etc?

just curious.

Mine is a SCPH 30003 ?????

Because they evolve and Sony need to make them more cheaply as new technology is available.
