Why not just reprogram ps2?
Why not just reprogram ps2? –
Just wondering, instead of installing a modchip, can't we just reprogram the ps2's eeprom to remove all security/checks? I know you can do that for xbox, but haven't heard about anything for ps2. Is the issue that no one has written a ps2 bios?
Also, someone was telling me about a ps2 mod that is a usb device, but doesn't require swapping discs! He did mention he would need to reprogram the ps2 though! Anyone heard of something like this?
because it would be hard as shit... The ps2 is not programed like a computer like an xbox is so it is very hard... What you just said is a slap in the face to every programer (ps2) out thier especially seeing you only have 1 post
How is it a slap in the face? I'm trying to learn here, not insult. I did a search in the forum before I posted and I couldnt find any information, so I thought I'd ask. Isn't that what these forums are for?
And the main reason why I ask is to see if anyone has heard of the usb modchip this guy was telling me about.
It has to be some sort of swap, there is no way to control the boot up checks through USB on the PS2. If there was, why would there be any solder mod chips?
Thats what I thought too. I guess I'll just have to get this guy to demo it for me.

the bios in PS2 is read-only, it cannot be written. XBOX uses flash for the BIOS, which can be written. also, PS2 has both software and hardware protections where XBOX only has software protection. so even if you could reprogram the BIOS, it would still not pass the hardware protections without modification.
I think protection software (or should I say firmware) located somewhere in the deep of CDVD drive hardware. I am not familiar with reprogramming any kind of microcontroller but I suppose it's not so easy to remove that "software". As far I know XBox can be hacked just by patching original dashboard. But PS2 is a whole different story, sometimes I believe that real heart of console is not an "Emotion Engine" but CDVD hardware (they probably call it mecacon).
The microcontroller could probably be replaced, but how many of us have a tool to remove smd microcontrollers. It'll probably cost the price of 5 PS2
yes, the ps2 is using mx23L6400 ROM as bios this rom is mask rom, it is fabricated in factory, and cann't be re programmed, that is why it is not possible.
