why dont crystal chip work with Sony hdd?

My friend has a crystal chip but in order to play backups he needs to take out the offial sony hard drive b4 he can use the chip. does this happen to anyone else and if so why does it happen and how can it be fixed? thank you.

Mine works just fine I have the 40gb Sony HDD that came with the PS2 linux add on kit. Using Crystal Chip. The console is a v5 NTSC
