The problem laser should be checked to see if it reads DVD-R Movies. If it does then that would be a good indication of a problem with the MOD install. If originals RSOD, that usually does indicate a Bad Mod but it could be from a weak laser or a combination of both. Possibly too long or small gauged wires used causing inaccurate MOD timing on bootup.
If the problem laser does check out bad with DVD-R movies and the better laser has good boot rate then problem solved, laser is going, check Pot setting and reduce ohms might give the laser a bit more use.
I don't think the Duo 2 SE likes to wait for the laser to read and it just shows the RSOD, but it could also be a modchip problem... but if you changed modchip that's not the problem, it's most likely that the laser is too old.
a laser on its last leg could boot original because the original always has better reflection than DVD-R. To test if a laser is good or not, never try with originals.
yeah - anyway - sometimes the chip patching and the original protection features on the game disc interfere - so the bad laser had some sort of effect so that the chip and the original game were not in sync and that screwed its performance
