Ok, I have a Soldering iron from RadioShack, it can switch between 15watts and 20watts. Obviously I am going to be using 15watts on the PS2 board when I receive my Magic3.1 in the mail from poamods.com. Now, I can get tips for $1.99 but they are probably a little too big, just a little bit bigger than 1mm i am sure. Where can I get 1mm tips (1mm or less)? I tried a store called Nutech Electronics but they only carry 1mm tips for Weller 25watt Soldering Irons

    Thanks for any help.

btw, is POA Mods a very good site to order from? I am hearing 2 stories from everyone, a) they have awesome service or b) they are crap and dont send anything.

    Thanks

unscrew the tip from the soldering iron and then put it into an electric drill. you can use emery paper or just touch it with a fine file to get it to the shape you want. RadioShack also sells spare tips for that iron if you get a little extreme !!!

DON'T file or sandpaper the tip, you'll damage it permanently if you do.
Most tips have a special coating to allow optimum solder flow and if you remove any of it, you'll find that solder will no longer stick to it.
A good tip size should be between 0.1mm to 0.4mm.

What do you mean go back quickly? I file my tip down for my magic 2 install about a month ago and it works perfect. Just as it used to. I had no probs with it after I sanded it down.

The tips are copper with a nickel chrome plating. By reshaping them you are removing the plating. The plating protects the copper from the flux and oxidation. For most people I think the iron will burn out long before the tip is beyond use.
The tips are a cheap and easily replaced item.
