I would like people that have measured theyre version 7 dvd lasers to report what ohms they were set at. I just put a magic3 in and it will only play cd games (backup and originals) and i put the meter on the diodes and the dvd ohm read 1500+ i adjusted it to 1450 with no luck. does anyone have any advice or can you report what yours measured at? charlies ps2 guide says that it should be 850. is this true??

Leave the pots alone. They are correctly adjusted for the individual laser on a new PS2.
Laser Azimuth adjustment is what usually gets it right for DVD-R. There may well be other reasons like the W point not on proerly.
There is NO factory set measurements on pot resistance for lasers on later versions. (just as charlie's guide for 'Recalibrating the PS2 Laser' said).
Trys this booting method(it works for me).
When ps2 is in sleep mode, press eject, then insert DVD game into tray, and then press RESET 3 times(fast, but not super fast;) )
And then game should boot.
My ps2 plays dvd backups just in this method, and some times with 1 reset tap, and my ps2 never shows RSOD, so it's a problem of ps2 laser(but it played them some time ago on with normal booting method, and my PS2 is a bit old-2,5 years, so my laser is tired).

Hi... i read various faqs.. my ps2 seem fine (v7), play ps1 original and backups, but not PS2 cdrs, original games , or backups....
Could this be the azimuth? I was so desperate that i ajusted the pot meters :( (without fwriting down the original ohm)
Could someoone easy explain how i ajust the azimuth? I read the faq, but i still do not understand..

I don't understand people that always want to adjust the laser pot, even on a brand new PS2 unit. I prefer buying better media than messing with the already delicate ps2 laser. As for the azymuth adjust, it's a better idea since there is almost no way you could damage the PS2 by doing that. You can find the azymuth screw by opening the PS2 CD drive top, you can't really miss it.

Ahhhh... i have tried many times now!
Magic 3 are pure crap and you need to tweak your laser in order to work with m3.
Put into 1200ohms, if still don't work, down to 1150ohms.

I have done over 100 Magic 3 installs on all versions. I never had any that would not boot, at least ones that were wired correctly. On occasion I would have b and c backwards for some reason, they are the only wires I do that with. Dunno why. Anyway, I never had to adjust the laser to read quality media burned on a good drive. Had to clean the laser in a couple, but other than that, they all worked good.
Yeah, he's right. NEVER mess with the laser unless you have to. You'd have to be REALLY desperate to adjust the pots, it's too big of a risk. Only adjust the pots as a last resort.Quote:
