What options do I have without breaking components of my PS2?
A pro installer and a decent modchip :)

If it is a v1-v3 I wouldn't even bother. Shit lasers.
I just installed a DMS3 into a V1 the other day. It works great now, but I did have to clean and tweak the laser a bit as DVD-R's took like 15 seconds to boot. Now it boots in about 3 seconds, which isnt too bad.
How did you clean and tweak the laser?Quote:

I would install a 17 wire DUO chip and cross your fingers that the laser is ok or fixable with small tweaks.
As the DUO is so cheap it is no biggy if the station is not up to playing CDR and DVDr's
