I have been working on trying to get a v4 laser to read dvd's because it didnt work that great in the first place. So somebody helped me online for a little while on how to measure the ohms with a digital multimeter. Well he said that the DVD pot should be between 800-850 ohms. Well i got it at 816 and that didnt work and then i got it at 801 and that didnt work either. Well right know i have it set at:
    DVD: 805 OHM
    CD: 664 OHM

I also have a v7 ps2 that i tore apart to get the ohm settings on that laser and this laser looks a bit different then the v4 laser but the Ohm settings for it are very different. Here they are:
    DVD: 735 OHM
    CD: 750 OHM

know if anybody knows anything about this or where i can find information about what the settings should be for the ohms please let me know. It is also very wierd how the cd OHM is higher then the DVD ohm on the v7. The guy that was helping me online said that the laser ohms are:
    DVD: 800-850OHM
    CD: 600-650 OHM

So i dont know if it matters which laser you have or not but if anybody can help at all it would be greatly appreciated! thanks

Ohmage is not overly critical and you should use it as a guide only. But don't go any lower than 650 on either pot, otherwise you can damage the laser diode or shorten the lasers life dramatically.
V7 and V4 lasers are slightly different and you shouldn't use that as a comarision. One thing though, V7 laser settings are usually over 1200 ohms, I'm surprised your's is so low.

Use an oscilloscope instead, and adjust the pots so it just under clipping with whatever media you use most. 10 min job, tops.

Unfortunately not many installers, let alone one off installers have the luxury of an oscilliscope.

You can pick one up at the flea market for next to nothing.

Here are a couple of links you might find usefull:

This one is for the Oscilloscope if you manage to find one

This one is a Excelent guide on Laser repair and adjustment.

Hope they help you out... Good luck

The first link had some very good pics on the test points, but the second link is useless for PS2. But I appreciate your efforts.

Any oscilliscopes found at flea markets here in Australia would definately be damaged in some way, either have a sick tube or is damaged beyond repair. Plus you need at least a 20MHz minimum to do the adjustments. Who in their right mind would sell a working CRO for peanuts???
Unfortunately scopes are a little too expensive to be used to adjust lasers only, and what other uses would the average Joe have for it??? Great to use for TV and VCR repair though, I can atest to that.

If i get axs to a oscilliscope then could i just take the laser to where the oscilliscope is at? or do i need the hole ps2 there?

Don't hold me to it but I think you will have to take the whole machine if you want to test it with a Oscilliscope...

You need to adjust the laser while it's connected to the Oscilliscope to get the best coverage...

Do you have a friend who is a Electrician? He may have one? It's certainly not worth hunting around for one to do 1 PS2 laser...

Or maybe you could borrow/use one from the local university or something...
