What modchip do I have?
What modchip do I have? –

Hey everyone
I lent my chunky ps2 to a friend of a friend so he could install a modchip for me... well.. about 2months later, still no reply from this guy, or my ps2... another 2 weeks later, i asked my friend to ask if he knows why it's taking so long...
well, i got a reply, in the form of a modded ps2, the modder appears to have stolen my ps2 and given me his... i have no idea what modchip is inside it, but it's really shite.
My(his) ps2 is believed to be a V5/6, it's not a swap thingy, it's one of those ones where you need to hold the reset button to load psx games...
well... the problem being, there's a shitload of games i have that it's refusing to load, at all. i'm just presented with the "please insert playstation 2 disc" screen ~_~; and sometimes when i click on the disc, the browser menu "loads"(fades out) and then fades back in, doing nothing at all
A few weeks back, i decided to open up the ps2 and try to figure out what the chip was, myself, so i could try to track down some FAQs about it.. i went through the bottom side of the ps2, and didn't get no where...
after about an hour, i gave up and put the ps2 back together... but it was no longer working!
the problem then, was that the cd tray wasn't opening, so, a few days ago i opened it up again, from the top this time, and poked around with this "cd tray gear" thingy. and now the cd tray is working fine, but alot of my games aren't loading, at all
Is there any kind of program/cdimage i can burn onto a cd, put into the ps2 and hopefully find out what modchip is inside? does such a thing exist?
Once i've figured out what chip it is, and what it's limitations are, then i'll proceed to get a better modchip installed, perhaps the DMS4 lite? - but NOT by the guy who has my ps2 -.-;
so... can anyone help me on this matter?
Cheers!
update: the ps2 seems to be incapable of playing DVDs.
I have tried 4 retail dvds(discs 1-3 of Mr Bean, and Disc 1 of Family Guy).
neither of these load, after approx 17seconds, the PS2 lets rip with a stomach-curdling sound, which sounds like the something on the rails spinning back and fourth REALLY fast and REALLY loud(odd - my retail disc for MGS3 works fine). (note: Mr Bean DVDs are region free, whereas Family Guy is Region 2 - I live in the UK).
I tried 3 homebrew DVDs, all of which have no regional settings, then ps2 does not make that annoying sound, but it doesn't read them, either... it just stays on the Browser screen saying "Reading disc", nothing more
further update: i just tried another retail uk DVD in the ps2, and it made that sound... i ejected it and put MGS3 back into the tray and sucked it back in... now, however, it seems the ps2 gui has frozen... nothing on the controller makes the console respond, however, after resetting the machine, mgs3 loads up just fine... very strange
oh.. here's something else.
i reset the console, placed one of my homebrew dvds in the tray and went to browser, i can see a CD, apparently a "PlayStation(R)2 DISC", but when i click on it, the screen just fades out/in

that's not really an option, i haven't seen my friend in many months
i think he may be married by now.. either that, or he's been engaged far too long.

thanks for the offers, but my spending is *heavily* limited, i'm kinda in the process of moving house, so alot of money is being spent on decorating and whatnot

The only way to check what chip you have inside your mechine is to open it and eather identefy it the text on it or the way it looks(post a picture) ,there are far to many chips that boot psx/dvds by using the power button(hold in for two seconds) and about 95% of those are clones of Magic 3.

lol yeah, well, i've been thinking for a while that it's a magic 3.1, seeing as it's a really cheap chip that works on this model ps2...
also, trying to out what find the modchip was, was what crippled the cd tray in the first place lol
