You need a macromod chip to disable macrovision. There's a few other chips that disable it too, but these dont: any Magic chip (including the latest version 3.1) and any Messiah chip that's out. I think DMS3 might. Just check the specs of other chips before buying if you really need an all in one chip. But I'd suggest getting a Messiah2 and a macromod chip if you really must. My Magic 3.1 is great, but I hear Messiah 2 has a more successful boot rate.
Anyhow, I read the macromod chip is based off some old neo chip code. The wiring points for macrovision disabling are far different from your typical Magic or Messiah chip.
Most people don't need to bother with it (even I didn't but I was bored, so what can you do) I never record DVD movies to VCR and my picture quality didn't really noticably improve for viewing DVD movies on my TV set. Shouldn't expect much from a macromod for that because, as people say, the DVD movie playing capabilities of the PS2 aren't so great. It's good enough for me though :P As I game more than watch movies.
