I have this chip (see picture) in my (pal) ps2 (v18 - 9004). It can play import (ntsc) ps2 games now. However, it does not load ps1 games anymore (also not original ps1 games). When I start my ps2 I'm in the infinity menu.

My question: is this a clone? It sais upgradable on the chip, what does that mean??

And maybe most importantly, is it fully compatible with my v18 ps2? If not which chips are 100% bound to work with a v18 ps2?

It is clone. The original Matrix chips is not in production anymore. Upgradable means you can flash it with latest firmware. I am not sure if it is true about clone, but original Matrix chips are upgradable. Latest version of original matrix firmware is 1.93. Yours is 1.88.
Try pressing circle button on boot up to force ps1 mode first.
Mars pro 816HD and Modbo 4.0 are compatible with v18.

    Does your ps2 run PS2 CDs ???

If not, need to solder a couple of wires from the modchip to allow cds and psx cds.
Some technicians avoid to solder those cables because bad burned or scratched CDs could kill the lens faster than DVDs.

Some clones simply dont run psx, but when i used that clone no problems.
Last Matrix firmware(1.93) was released in november 06.
Dont need to actualize a new clon, they are already in 1.93(some "are" 1.99 or 2.0).
Upgrade is not available in any clone.
1.88 is almost the same, dont worry.

If doesnt work anyway, put a modbo4.

    That's somewhat unlogical,...
CDs might kill the 'CD-Laserdiode' faster than DVDs the 'DVD-Laser diode', but none of both kill the lens, afaik...

Even if one diode is killed, it shouldn't affect the other one... (only if the lens is blurred)
