What chip can play pre-release PS2 discs?

My friend got hold a debug ps2 (model DTL-H1000S)...But it seems the unit completely died.It came with some old preleased PS2 games. I tried putting them on a regular non modded slim ps2 but it wouldnot read them. My friend told me that he was told that the debug unit read them fine though.

Is there a modchip that can read them?

I have exactly opposite situation as you. Look @ my post about modded ps2 will play developmental games.
