I got this chip from a V4 no gap PS2. The owner said he had it installed 3 years ago and that it plays Domestic/Foreign & Original/Back-up games. It played foreign games but it didn't play Back-ups, this could be due to the fact that a couple of the wires were already loose when I pulled it out.

Funky looking modchip, most I've seen are in the size of a square.

My guess is that it is either a very early mod chip or one of those DIY mod chips. But I would like to know exactly and get more info about it.

Looks like an SX28. I'm not well-versed in modchip history but the two major code families that this brings to mind are Origa 1.x and Magic 3/ICE.

that is an origa chip.. it used the sx28 much like the magic 3's but only connected to the cd/dvd controller points.... it was the first chip to play imports and it played backups with a single swap... the messiah team combined the info they got from this chip with bios patching routines (possibly from the neo 4) to make the first 100% no swap chip

Awesome, you wouldn't know of any sites with install pics/diagrams would you? I want to mess around with this chip a little before throwing it out.

I don't think there are any sites with the diagrams still up.. that chip was pretty much the best swap chip released, but it's around 4 years old... I'll try to check tommorow to see if I still have any of the old diagrams on my hd...

What a nice piece of scene memorobelia. If combined with a neo4, a complete, though rough, nonswap solution could be had at only 60+ wires.

here's the chip schematic and some diagrams. change the url to find v4, v5/6 (i didn't know it supported the last set). There should be v1-2, and maybe jap v0. (it was originally a jap only chip).

the diagrams for old mods like this are certainly disappearing.
And hey, send it to me if you're going to throw it out.

Oh wow, that 60+ wire mod would suck to do. Did anyone here ever do that mod? If so how long did that take? I imagine that would take a whole day to do. I hope the PS3 doesn't require something like that.
