I just modded an xbox and I'm looking to mod a PS2. Is the a particular version of ps that is easier, more reliable after modding? Also, which chip should I use to get the most features out of the mod?

easiest to mod is v5-v7. chip with most features is dms3. note that modding a ps2 is much harder than modding an xbox though. the points are a lot smaller.
Second the v5-v7.
version 7 is the best and easiest.
well, none are that easy, but i agree with netmech, v7.
Why be shy? If you're gonna go, go big. V10. The lord hates a coward!
v7 are the best one.
v9 = pure crap (LA syndrome)
v10 = semi pure crap (LA syndrome too)
I agree version 7 are the easiest.
With the romeo mod, the version 9's and 10's seem to be doing ok.
Xbox's are much easier to mod than a ps2.
Good luck with your mod.
I saw a ver 7 at a pawn shop. It was returned claimimg the unit said no disk. The guy blew it out and it worked. Does this unit sound like it will need a laser soon?

Can't really say. Although blowing it out is not nearly as good as taking a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to it.
if you are looking at getting it, try to talk him down, has it ever been opened or anything? If it has, you should either walk away, or talk him down by a fair amount, telling him that you don't know what was done to the innards. If it is still sealed up, there is a little cog wheel in there that has a lot of adjustment room on it to move the laser around. It will probably give you a fair amount more life out of the laser if that is the case.
What are they asking for it? Anything more than $100 is too much, unless it comes with some extras, either controllers or a memory card or maybe a network adapter, and even then, you have to use your best judgement.
Version 7's are really easy to mod, though.
