After countless hours of frustration and swearing, I've found that using the updated clock point with the Messiah 2's on the version 5 PAL PS2's won't allow the chip to fuction at all. I used the original clock point using twisted pair kynar wire and found it to work perfectly. I encountered this problem on three version 5 machines.
So for anyone out there that's been using the alternate point and the mod chip refuses to work, then just use the original clock point and hopefully that will fix things.
I find the alternate clock point to be a bit suspect, since your approximately 10 ohms higher than the original point. Who in their great wisdom decided the alternate point???

Thanks for that Relayer. hDL discovered the alternate point but I prefer the ground plane approach that you've described. Can you confirm it weas v5 (BIOS 050) not v6, please?

Sorry for the delay in answering, but its definately a version 5 PS2 board# GH-015 Bios: 040
As far as I'm aware, we don't have version 6 PS2's here in Australia. I've never come across one yet.
