Version 4 no-gap diagram question

Alright in the v.4 no gap diagram it shows that i can solder onto rectangle like copper pads that lead away from the bois chip (these are not the via's) and i was wondering in the diagram where it shows the copper pads to solder to if i could just solder to the pins instead?
