I wouldn't recommend trying to put a modchip in a V1 PS2. I tried in a version 2 and it is just way too much work and odds are it won't work and your PS2 will be junk. You need to be an expert at soldering to even hope to get it to work. Too many solder points and some are onto the leads coming off of a chip which are less than a mm wide. I would recommend buying a newer version and going that route if you want a mod chip or use the swap tricks.

Agreed. I just attempted to mod a v2 and damn was it work. I can solder everything on the top fine. But my 15w iron can't remove the daugther board for me to solder the sx point on the back of the thing. Trust me, stay away from v1-2. V3 is fine cause its daugther board is detachable but v1-2 are soldered together by Sony and it's a PAIN to get all that solder off.

Forget using the more advanced chips for a V1-V2; instead use a DUO since it's the easiest to install. You don't even have to take the motherboard off of the case, just pop off the bottom part of the PS2 and get to work. The fine pitch legs are definitely a pain to solder on, but the key is to hold that iron as still as you can and use flux.

My V2 is still chugging away and I haven't had any issues to speak of.

the only chip i see that uses all points on the one side without desoldering board and doing points on other side is duo2.

use duo2 on these v1 boards. i tryed a matrix mxl2 on one using the alt points as described on thier diagrms(all on one side) th alt scex and clk but it didnt work till i used the ones on the other side.
ironacly the diagrams for mxl2 are no longer on thier site with no reference to these alt points(same as alt points for mesiah2 found somewere else long ago)

if anyone knows of any other chip that will work on v1 using alt scex and alt clk if clk is needed on that chip please share but only one i ever got to work soldering to the one side was duo2.

ensure your laser is in good shape b4 u do as these v1 are old and laser may be shit.

There is an alternative SX point on the top oif the board, making it unneccessary to take the board apart, also the clock point is on top alos, and that goes for the v1 as well

I was installing a Matrix Infinity. The Matrix Team said that it was not good to use those alt points. They know of a y alternative but they said it would not perform as well as the original y point. I don't think y point is the clock point. They told me y is for upgrading the chip's firmware via cd. I tried the alt sx (near the corner on the board) point, didn't work.
