Valkyrie Profile 2: No PS1 controller workaround?

Hi,
I've just hit the infamous VP2 freezing problem, and I have no ps1 controller that I can use to bypass it.

I've heard reports about being able to bypass this glitch by starting the game up while leaving the ps2 controller unplugged. I tried this but it doesn't work for me. Perhaps I am doing it wrong? Does anyone have more details about doing this bypass?

Is there anyway to run this game without a ps1 controller?

PS: For such a great copy-protection scheme, i'm surprised that there aren't more games using the same system?

System specs:
Crystal Chip 1.1 with hacked firmware 34.
V7 Playstation.
Burned on Verbatim DVD+R media.
