Ok its seems clear that the low resistance of the tracking coil
kills the La chip, maybe we can extend the life of the chip a bit by extra cooling but this will not solve the cause for this all.
We need to find a way to make the resistance of the tracking coil higher by putting for instance a extra resistor in line.
however this will probably give more disk read errors on certain cheaper media. but it should stop the la killing syndrome.
think about how to implement this.
Adding extra thermal pads or something else to keep it cool may not solve the problem because the LA may go off without overheat. Some people stated that their v9 burned in no time and there is no way LA got overheat. Correct me if I'm wrong on this.
But I figured out a nice practical solution. Without voiding the warranty if we let it play an original but very scratched dvd movie (by ourselves) for hours every day it will dye if it's problematic. If an original media is very bad, it may be the same as putting a high quality backup. So we won't void warranty.:)
I thought this wasn't happening with V10s?
nonen666: the sad thing is that many people (me too) chip ps2s that work without a chip for months... And after chipping they die in days. I don't think ->quality<- media can kill them in such a short period, while it has been working for months with original media without a hitch... There must be yet another factor, why those die.

Well, on a spanish forum they are doing exactly this.
They are placing two resistors on the coils lines.
Also on the same forum they are telling that during the test the LA was getting from cold to 80 Degree Centigrade in LESS than two minutes!!
I don't really know what we could use to keep it cold, unless we decide to start using Liquid Nitrogen as a cooling media for the V9 :D :D :D
ive thought about this the pads are there for 2 10k resistors but are they leaving it in line or cutting the track and bridging the resistors on the focus and tracking circuit ?Quote:

uns97, yes with perfect original dvd nothing will happen, but I say we can totally scratch an original and ps2 will strangle trying to focus and if it survives then the coils are good, if not sony will replace it. And there is very big difference between good media and messed up one.

nonen666: I have never had a perfect original... No matter how bad originals I tested the machines with, they survived everything, even playing for 5 hours a day, every day in a month. When they were chipped and used Verbatim backups, played 2 hours a day, they died in a week... two died without disk inserted. How could a "no disk" kill the LA ?

I belive that low relectivity media can indeed put more stress to the coils/LA assembly.
If the media have lower reflectivity they will need more power to get back a signal of the same strenght from this lower quality DVD in respect to an original (or higher quality) DVD.
More power means more heath to be dissipated from the LA chip, and so higher temperature reached by the LA.
So you can have an unmodded PS2 working good for monthes with original supports until you mod it and use inside it for the first time a low quality DVD and burn the LA.
