V9 Syndrome or not ????
V9 Syndrome or not ???? –

I have a v9 modded with magic v +. It has the romeo mod done . Lets assume for the moment that the soldering is not the problem. It worked for about 3 - 4 months without a hitch. All of a sudden it stopped working. Just sat on browser screen . Pulled it apart and the wires near cluster of vias (where B to I wires attach) looked to have signs of heat.(slightly melted insulation). Everywhere else looked fine.
I took the chip out cleaned up the board , checked for shorts on the vias etc. Measured the laser coils , both cd and dvd were 5.7 . The console will play muisc cd's but that's about all. Is there something that I should specifically be looking for? Is this "v9 syndrome" even with the romeo mod done? I haven't got too much faith in these v9's anymore. Has anyone got any clues ? Cheers

Probably burnt the laser.

did you check if it still plays originals without the chip? you could try adjust the white wheels at the back of the laser unit, but it sounds like a duff laser to me.

It will play original games every now and then but when it does load them they skip very badly. So just because the coils read good , that doesn't mean the laser is OK ? ? If the laser "IS" shot what would have caused it? Why were the via points looking like they got hot ? By the way , Thanks for your replies.

Hi Cleo
laser coils and laser diodes are 2 different things
just because coils read fine, doesnt mean the diodes are ok unfortunately
The via points could have just been a reaction to flux (not sure without seeing them)
but laser diodes can blow for a number of reasons.
try mucking around with laser hieght but mark the white wheel with felt tip marker first so know original spot and also azimuth.
if this doesnt help then it would seem a new laser is in order
cheers

Thanks dungbeetle , So if that is the case it looks as though it was just bad luck that the diodes shit themselves. Is there any way I can check the diodes? I haven't got another laser to put in and test at the moment.I sure don't want to buy a new laser and have the same thing happen. Which way to go ??? " New laser" or "very good condition v9 doorstop"? Any advice appreciated .
Cheers cleo
