    Hi all

I'd like to expose a problem to the community. Please give me advice.
Yesterday a guy brought me back a V/ (gh-019) I modded 2-3 months ago with a Magic3.1, saying that suddendly it doesn't take any media. I take it and verified that it turns on correctly, the leds are ok and the eject works correctly. The problem is that any media you put on (cd or dvd, original or backup), the drive start spinning with a loud noise and the ps2 stays in the electrons screen without boot (no RSOD or other things).
I opened up and removed the Magic chip, checked all the solder points for bridges etc (especially cd/dvd points) burt found nothing. The ps2 continued working in this bad way. I looked at the drive while inserting a media and saw the it was spinning and the sled with the laser was moving slowly (probably trying to find a correct groove). At this point I took a gh-022 mobo from MY ps2 and mounted it on the 'bad' ps2 and IT WORKS CORRECTLY! So I assume that the drive and lens are all right. The problem is on the mobo. Next move was to check the BA chips and fuses. All the fuses are good, PS11 and PS12 are all right, and pin 8 of BA5815FM chip doesnt' give zero. Well, I'm a little concerned now...

    Anyone has an idea ?????

    Tnx for all. Byez !!!

and then for some reason the "BA5815FM" chip has blown on you, you need to replace it.

...Well, I read that if the PS11 is OK and the pin 8 of BA5815FM has NOT continuity with ground, usually the BA5815FM is OK. The PS11 is OK and pin 8 has NOT continuity with ground.
Do you think that the BA5815FM chip is damaged and perform some operations (when i press eject, the slot plate come out perfectly...) while it cannot focusing the lens any more ?

The BA5815FM IC's may partially burn (e.g. only one channel burnt, or a channel partially burnt giving other voltage levels). This may have happened because at least one of the lens coils is partially shorted. Measure the resistance of the lens coils. It should be at least 5 ohms. A laser with burnt lens coils may work OK for some time on a board with a good BA5815FM IC, until the BA5815FM partially or totaly burns due to overcurrent.

    Hi !

Well, I'd like to understand if I did well what you told me : in the pic attached i marked A and B the 2 points where I measured the resistance. On the other side of the lens there are 2 similar points. On one side it reads about 4.8 ohms, and on the other one it reads 2.5 !
I measured the right points ?

    Tnx bye !

Laser can't be the problem, as he said that he tested the drive with another motherboard and those worked just fine together.

Anyway, phew there have been a thousand topics regarding BAs and up till now there has not been any final idea how to test them perfectly. The fuse and pin 8 test doesn't give always the correct value, as said the BA can be partially burnt that has nothing to pin 8 and the fuse. Anyway, the other BA chip is even more interesting, is there any method to test it at all ?

    regards, Stephen

Yes, you measured the resistance in the right place. Both the coils should have around 5 ohms each. One of them is partially shorted, giving you a readout of 2.5 ohms. It means that more current is needed for moving the lens up-down / laterally. A new BA5815FM may allow such overcurrent (like it has happened with the other board you have tried) and the laser would work for a limited period of time. On the broken board, the BA5815FM was exposed a long time to this overcurrent, it has partially burned. So it can't provide the overcurrent anymore. It may work with a new laser, but the best thing to do would be to replace the BA5815FM.

    Hi!

uns97: Emanuel explained that the laser is working but has a fault that lead to overcurrent and damaged the BA5815FM... I think he's right

Emanuel: Tnx for your great help ! I tried to measure the resistance in the same points of my own V7 (a working gh-022) PS2 and i found that both are around 5 ohms, so I'm almost sure that you're right. You say that best thing is to replace BA5815FM, but don't you think that in another 3-4 months the same damage can occur ? Is it possible to fix the lens ? Or it's better to replace BA5815FM and the lens ?

    Hope I'm not bothering you.

    Regards
